Insights of O*Net

For this weeks blog I will discuss my experiences with O*Net since we used the website this week for the discussion post. I have previously used O*Net for an Industrial Psychology class. Throughout all of my encounters with O*Net, I have never had a bad experience. This website is extremely handy and can be accessed easily. The amount of information available is exceptional and after using the website I did not have further questions about the particular career.
Since it is important to synthesize what is being taught and what is occurring in the outside world, I have chosen to investigate Clinical Psychology as a career using O*Net. Clinical Psychologists diagnose mental and emotional disorders of individuals through observation, interview, and psychological tests, and formulate and administer programs of treatment. They are to interact with clients and assist them in achieving proper adjustment and development. The Holland Code for this career is ISA. Investigative occupations involve working with ideas and require heavy amounts of thinking. Social occupations involve working with, communicating with, and teaching people. This is the brunt of being a clinical psychologist. They must have interpersonal skills to successfully assist their clients. Artistic occupations involve working with forms, designs, and patterns. I can translate this into the psychologist’s treatment plan. They must be flexible and know that change does not occur in a linear pattern.
Before choosing to become a clinical psychologist, I wanted to be a physical therapist. When I set my goal to become a clinical psychologist, I used O*Net in my Industrial Psychology class and researched the career of clinical psychology. The information on O*Net was extremely beneficial for me. I was able to see what is expected of me for educational requirements. A background in science, technology, engineering and mathematics may be necessary. For this occupation, a master’s degree is required. A doctoral degree can be obtained and after is when you can call yourself a psychologist.

When investigating this occupation I found myself extremely motivated to finish school so I can begin working in the field. Knowing that a master’s degree is necessary, I know I have to work hard in school to give myself the best opportunities. My number one value in life is to help others the best I can. Becoming a psychologist can allow my personal values to be implemented in my work environment. I have high interpersonal skills and am flexible in thinking.
